Even though type 1 and 2 diabetes may have very different causes, they have similar symptoms which are the body’s reaction to high blood glucose levels. Some main physical symptoms include:
* glycosuria (glucose appearing in urine): This is caused due to the high blood glucose levels which will increase the amount of glucose filtered by the kidneys. The amount of filtered glucose will exceed the amount that the kidneys can reabsorb which results in excess glucose being excreted in the urine.
* polyuria (frequent urination): This is caused when the excess filtered glucose that cannot be reabsorbed remains in the tubule lumen, which retains water therefore increasing urine flow
* polydipsia (increased thirst): This is caused by the increase of osmotic pressure in the blood which stimulates the thirst receptors in the brain.
* Fatigue: Body cells are not able to absorb glucose which is the body’s main energy source.
* Increased hunger: caused by the body’s false response to not having enough glucose because body cells are unable to absorb from lack of insulin.
* Feeling cold and shaking: high blood-glucose levels may cause poor blood circulation and affect nerves in the body
